X-mas meeting at PAF Reims

On the 27 December a group of people come together in Reaim to discuss the opportunities of a an initiative of Jan Ritsema to create an "organization" for a new space of cultural production.

The group will stay more or less together and discuss until the 2nd of January.

Everybody is welcome to comment and think together with us that has travelled to the close to end of the world.

The morning session of the 27th we started out discussing the economical situation that paf REIMS can offers and estimate. The discussion forked out into an endless grid of issues however circulating around economy and how it relates to what can or not be produced and thought in the framework of paf REIMS

Jan Ritsema proposed that three strong desires from him was:


- To make paf REIMS into a succesful experiemnt in the field of art and art related production.

- To conceptualize and set up an educational platform that orientate radically different in respect of discipline, control and restriction.

- To support and strenghten an art that Jan call thinking.

Towards the end of the session we come to discuss how and in what sense paf REIMS is related to "us" as artists and doers. A conflict is obvious between "staying close to ourselves" or "to be as foregein to us as possible".

The session ended and we had a great lunch.

A second session started with a tour around the building.

The beginning of the session starts with Bojana Cvejic asking the American participants to reflect on what paf REIMS mean to them.

User-created institution is hot and production-centric institution is dead cold. The traditional system for institutions which relies on virtuosity, skill and different methods of preventing imitators are being overrun be more effective user-created modes of production. This also changes the role of the institution, away from a role where we can only have needs, towards a much more active part were we shape and re-shape organisations and institutions.

When there is no architecture everything is possible. When there is architecture nothing is possible. When you propose an institution and you already have a site and a building, they will immediately start to produce the organisation of the non-institution. Methods of organisation can take on different form, but there is no non-organisation. Maybe chaos could be called anti-organisation, but of course chaos only exists as an abstract representation. So if there is organisation connected to a physical building you have an institution.
